OLDS, Alta — Olds College plans to sponsor two students from Ukraine to study at the campus.

Applications for the program will be accepted as of June 1 with a deadline to apply of Aug. 1. A website that will have more information was expected to be created by June 1.

Students coming to Olds will likely be between the ages of 18-29.

“The decision to consider sponsoring a Ukrainian student was made earlier this spring," Peter Mal, the college’s registrar and associate vice-president of students wrote via an email.

Mal said the move is part of a larger effort by colleges and polytechnical institutes to bring Ukrainian students to Canada.

In fact, about 40 institutions are expected to bring more than 150 Ukrainian students to Canada to study as they flee the Russian invasion in their home country.

“Olds College is actively working with national and provincial agencies to get the word out,” Mal wrote.

He said the students are expected to relocate to Olds within a week or two of the start date for their programs of study.

Mal said those students will likely stay in residence.
