TRAFFIC BLITZ — St. Albert RCMP teamed up with provincial sheriffs and Edmonton Police Sept. 17, 2022, to do a traffic enforcement blitz in St. Albert. Some 40 charges were laid. ST. ALBERT RCMP/Photo

A 37-year-old man will appear in court this December after being caught going 142 km/h on a motorcycle in St. Albert.

St. Albert RCMP released a report Sept. 22 about an enforcement blitz held Sept. 17 in co-operation with Edmonton Police and the Sheriff Highway Patrol.

Cpl. Morgan Kyle of the St. Albert RCMP said police set up speed traps and check-stops throughout the city during the afternoon and evening to enforce traffic laws, resulting in about 40 charges.

One person riding a motorcycle was clocked going 142 km/h southbound on Veness Road near the Anthony Henday during the blitz, Kyle said. The speed limit on Veness is 60 km/h.

“It’s obviously a very high speed, especially in a 60 zone,” Kyle said, one that posed a safety risk to the driver and anyone around him.

Kyle said a 37-year-old male was charged with speeding as a result and is set to appear in provincial court on Dec. 16. If convicted, he could receive a $2,500 fine, six demerits, and a 90-day licence suspension. Kyle was unable to provide The Gazette with the man's name, stating the officer with that information is currently on holidays.

Eleven officers also pulled over about 400 drivers for roadside breath tests, Kyle said.

Five were found to be impaired, with one of them being a novice driver who had been drinking. All had received provincial penalties such as licence suspensions and vehicle seizures.
