EDMONTON — An Edmonton-area mother faces charges after a police investigation into sexual abuse allegations involving her toddler.

Alberta's Integrated Child Exploitation Unit says officers rescued the child on Saturday from a home in Strathcona County east of the city after getting a tip from the FBI.

Police say in a release Tuesday that the child was taken to hospital for evaluation and Alberta Children’s Services is involved.

The mother, who can't be named to protect the identity of the child, faces charges including sexual exploitation, sexual interference, arrangement to commit a sexual offence against a child, making child pornography and other offences.

She has been released from custody and is to appear in court on Feb. 22 in Sherwood Park, Alta.

Police say the child's father was not aware of the alleged offences and has been co-operating with the investigation.

Investigators say police in Yuba City, Calif., arrested a male suspect in October.

The Yuba City Police Department charged Brian Davis, 30, with having sex with a victim under 10 years old and possession of obscene matter involving a minor in sexual acts with the intent to distribute.

Police allege Davis was conversing over social media with a woman somewhere in the Edmonton region, including chats that depicted and communicated graphic sexual abuse of the woman’s child.
