A new outreach program in the Calgary area is providing another creative way to connect with isolated seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Alberta government reinstated the province's 1976 coal policy on Feb. 8 in the face of mounting public backlash, but Banff town council doesn't believe the announcement went far enough.

"(The bill) makes it more accessible for people with mental health disabilities to kill themselves as a form of treatment without making mental health supports free."

In the preceding two weeks, the church has held services with 290 and 300 congregants, with video of the services showing no masks. Prior to the arrest, a $1,200 fine was levied in December.

"It's great. I mean any time you can get on the ice, especially during COVID, is just kind of a blessing," said Ryan Straschnitzki.

"An important part of being a responsible government is to admit when you've made a mistake and to fix it, and that's what we are doing," Savage said.
