Antler Up Edmonton, the city's CFL team has finally revealed its new name. Following a public vote and and more than one season without a name other than the Edmonton Football Club, the local CFL franchise debuted its new name today: Edmonton Elks.
"This is a new chapter in a story that began 72 years ago, officially, and over 100 years ago, unofficially," said Edmonton Elks President and CEO Chris Presson in an announcement of the team's new name Tuesday. "We have a new name, but the same colours. We bleed green and gold for Edmontonians.
We’re asking Edmontonians to join us in what’s ahead, to help us write this new chapter -- not just in wins and championships on field -- but as champions in the community."
The community-owned team debuted the new logo, in green and gold colours and #ElksCHARGE as part of the unveiling. The name change follows the controversial removal of the team's former name Edmonton Eskimos.
The CFL season is set to debut this August, if COVID-19 restrictions allow.
