Calling all gardeners who want another project to tackle: The City of Edmonton is offering free boulevard gardening permits for those who have a strip of City land between the sidewalk and road adjacent to your property, that you want to beautify!

As the City explains in a news release, residents can add character and vitality to neighbourhoods by creating boulevard gardens that transform underutilized space into vibrant streetscapes. These gardens promote community pride, ecological diversity and climate resilience, said the City.

Obtaining a permit for your boulevard garden is simple, said the City. To get started, visit the boulevard gardening web page, familiarize yourself with the rules and guidelines, and choose a permit option. Most gardeners will choose a Declaration for low-impact gardening, while others with more ambitious projects may require a License of Occupation (LOO). The annual fee is waived for boulevard gardens submitted in 2022 and 2023.

To celebrate the launch of the Boulevard Garden program, a few lucky green-thumbed Edmontonians will have their gardens featured on the City of Edmonton Instagram and Twitter accounts. For eligibility, simply share a photo of your garden with #boulevardeningyeg —keep an eye on our official social channels for more information.

Happy gardening!
