Streaming online for one more weekend, The Look is the latest from Northern Light Theatre (NLT) --an enlightening look at the life of an aged-out supermodel who was once a celebrity--the original "Estelle Girl" of the Estelle Cosmetics line. But can one cope with getting older; with not being the young 'it' girl anymore? In the North American Premiere, Australian playwright Alexa Wyatt's one-woman show, featuring Linda Grass, follows Marilyn as she gives a lecture on cosmetics and demonstrates the various 'looks' and fantasy images she inhabited as the 'Estelle Girl'. Over the course of the lecture, Marilyn is forced to confront her real self. NLT artistic director Trevor Schmidt says filming a theatre piece creates many logistics that need managing, but it's the state of the art in the time of COVID-19. "There's been lots of projects going online this last year, and we expect it will continue, even in hybrid form (live and online together)," said Schmidt. "Presenting online allows NLT to keep artists employed while continuing to celebrate the intimacy of the productions with the audience." Along with direction, set and costume design by Trevor Schmidt, the creative team for The Look includes assistant to the director Bethany Hughes and original composition and sound design by Darrin Hagen. |
