Fall home maintenance checklist

A little home upkeep at the start of each season can add to the value of your home and protect against weather and other threats—while reducing long-term repair costs. The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) home maintenance checklist suggests easy fixes and improvements to tackle before the cold weather arrives.

 

Fall

  • checkChange HVAC filters; clean dryer vent
  • checkTest smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • checkCheck the roof for loose or missing shingles
  • checkSchedule a furnace inspection
  • checkCover patio furniture or store it inside
  • checkProtect air conditioner with a waterproof cover
  • checkSeal exterior gaps where critters could enter
  • checkDrain and shut off exterior faucets and hoses

Winter

  • checkInspect window and door seals; repair any leaks
  • checkVacuum bathroom and kitchen exhaust fan grills and filters
  • checkClear any debris blocking chimney
  • checkTest sump pump, if applicable
  • checkInspect insulation, adding more as required
  • checkInsulate pipes near windows and doors
  • checkStock a winter home survival kit
