Help celebrate Waste Collector Appreciation Day

Remember waste collectors on June 17, and every day!

The City of Edmonton wants residents to say 'thanks!' to their waste collectors on June 17 (or anytime, really). That day is Waste Collector Appreciation Day because, where would we be without someone collecting all our waste!  Truly!

Whether it’s collecting waste, processing it at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre, or working at Eco Stations or other drop-off locations, the City’s waste staff play an essential role in keeping Edmonton safe and clean.

There are a number of ways that residents can say thank you, including:

  • Attach a “thank you” sign to your cart, bags or bin for your waste collectors to see.
  • Post a message on social media, tagging @CityOfEdmonton and #yegWaste so we can share it with our staff.
  • If you see a collector on their route, wave and thank them at a safe distance.
  • If you’re visiting an Eco Station or the Edmonton Waste Management Centre, say “thanks” to staff for the work they do.

You can also show your appreciation by properly sorting and setting out your waste to make their jobs easier.

Northlands Coliseum Big Bin Event

The City is hosting a Big Bin event this weekend on June 10 and 11 at Northlands Coliseum. In addition to dropping off bulky items that can’t be picked up through regular waste collection, residents are invited to thank staff in person or through a written note, and take photos with a collector or a waste truck.

Residents can also check out on-site equipment, learn from Waste Educators and pick-up free compost (residents will need to bring a shovel and pail).
