Alberta Care Provider of the Year
Of 15 finalists from across the province, Garneau Hall's Lyle Ison is the recipient of the 2022 “Alberta Care Provider of the Year” Award. Ison has served as General Manager at Garneau Hall Seniors Community in Edmonton for nine years.
The “Alberta Care Provider of the Year” is picked from a pool of nominees that work in all levels of care. The Alberta Continuing Care Association (ACCA) celebrates winners each year.
“Lyle is deserving of this honour,” said Andrew Trinder, Director of Senior Living for VRS Communities. “Lyle's impressive strengths are reflected in how her property and team are united. Garneau Hall excels under her leadership and care."
In 2017, Brody Williams, Recreation Therapist with Advantage Assist at Garneau Hall, also received the “Alberta Care Provider of the Year” award.
Williams favours the use of music in his interactions with residents diagnosed with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. His coworkers describe him as a “positive, happy, dedicated, and knowledgeable person who goes above and beyond to develop therapeutic relationships with each individual resident in the hopes of bettering their lives.”
Alberta Prime Times manager receives Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Medal
Alberta Prime Times manager Angie Hampshire has received the Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Medal, presented by NDP MLA Marie Renaud at a November event. The medal recognizes Albertans who have exemplified the true meaning of public service through outstanding contributions and ongoing commitment to enhancing the province.
Renaud offered gratitude for Hampshire's "many contributions, both within our local business community through volunteer work on the board of the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce, as well as the thoughtful and impactful work she has done with the St. Albert Bereavement Fellowship and Victim Services."
"People like Angie make our city--and Alberta--an even better place," said Renaud.
Hampshire works for Great West Media as the manager of Alberta Prime Times and the advertising manager for the St. Albert Gazette.
“I’ve known Angie for about 25 years. She is a selfless individual who volunteers countless hours to our community," added Brian Bachynski, Great West Media president.
“We were talking one day, during the Christmas season. Through conversation I learned she and her daughter buy gift cards every year and drive to downtown Edmonton and hand them out to those in need. I thought I knew Angie after a quarter century. This was a new one. I have no doubt she does much more than I’m aware of. Much more.”
The Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal will be awarded to 7,000 Albertans throughout 2022 in recognition of significant contributions to the province.
Congratulations from everyone at Great West Media, Angie!
In a pickle
Did you recognize National Pickle Day last month? No, not pickleball...the real McCoy, the crunchy, sour, green vegetable that enhances sandwiches. The Provincial Archives of Alberta marked the day with a post to social media, showing a 1949 photo of a worker at Groaders Cannery in Taber as he emptied bags of cucumbers into barrels for processing. It also posted a couple of tried-and-true pickle recipes from the archive's collection. Give them a try!
Oh Christmas Tree
On a mild winter day, while walking through deep winter snow
Looking for the finest tree, ever.
The mighty spruce was found in the beautiful forest; hidden deep among the others, sheltered and protected.
Perfect in every way, this tree had full branches: tall, eloquent, faultless.
Cutting it down and pulling it to the sled; oh, what fun and joy.
In the house to be decorated, remembering the Christmas times we share each year.
It's a spiritual time, celebrating midnight mass together, sharing meals and gifts and joy.
The birth of Christ, a special joy that fills our hearts as we celebrate with presents and food.
Our Christmas tree, with sparkling decorations and an angel shining from on top.
Decorations, kept for this moment, when we adore the nativity scene and the Christmas joy
Celebrating with family, and singing joyful carols together
Merry Christmas to all.
