Canadian divers McKay, Benfeito lock up Olympic spot with world cup gold

TOKYO — Canadian divers Caeli McKay and Meaghan Benfeito secured their spot at the Tokyo Olympics with a first-place finish at a world cup event in Japan on Sunday.

The pair won gold in the women's 10-metre synchro event with a combined score of 305.94.

Montreal's McKay and Benfeito, of Laval, Que., topped Lois Toulson and Eden Cheng of Great Britain, and Germany's Tina Punzel and Christina Wassen to finish first.

Canadians Philippe Gagne of Ville Mont-Royal, Que., and Thomas Ciprick of Baie D'Urfe, Que., withdrew from the three-metre synchro event due to injuries and health concerns unrelated to COVID-19.

Gagne also withdrew from the individual event set to take place later this week, and is returning to Canada.

Ciprick is expected to compete in the men's individual three-metre event where he hopes to lock up an Olympic berth.
