1936 - 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sergie “Serge” Les Dobko of St. Albert on November 16, 2020 at the age of 84 at the Sturgeon General Hospital.

Serge is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pat; sons, Mark (Karen) and Randy (Rada); daughters, Sherrie Griep (Kees) and Lisa (Roger and his daughter, Breighann) and treasured grandsons, Christopher Dobko and Spencer Dobko. He is also survived by his sister, Mildred Schultz and brother, Nestor (Eleanor).

Serge was preceded by his parents, Metro and Anne; brothers, Mike and Edward and sisters, Elizabeth and Evelyn.

Serge was born on July 10, 1936 in Calmar where he grew up on the family farm. However, he chose to take a different path and attended the University of Alberta where he graduated with a BSc. in Chemical Engineering in 1958. He was proud of the fact that he was the first in his family to graduate from university and he set an example for all of us.

Serge spent almost his entire 35-year professional career working in the area of air quality management and air pollution with the Alberta government, most notably Alberta Environment. In fact, he was the first engineer ever hired in the province specifically to deal with air quality issues. He was proud of his dedication and professionalism throughout his career and lived by the ideals that you should always do the right thing no matter what. These traits were greatly admired by the staff that worked for him at that time. In retirement, he moved on to work for many years with H&R Block doing tax consulting or as he called it, his “fun career”.

But his proudest accomplishments were being a good husband, father and grandfather, supporting us all as we found our way in the world, pursued our educations and passions with unwavering support. In his later years, his greatest joy was partaking in family get-togethers at our home in St. Albert for holidays or for whatever other reason. To sit and watch what his family had become, even near the end, was deeply satisfying to him.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no Memorial Service at Serge’s request.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations in Serge’s name may be made to the Sturgeon Hospital Foundation, 201 Boudreau Road, St. Albert, AB, T8N 9Z9 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 5241 Calgary Trail NW, Suite 144, Centre 104, Edmonton, AB, T6H 5G8.
