With deep sadness we announce the passing of Gery Unterasinger, of Canmore AB and Lienz, Austria at 52 years of age on June 2nd, 2022. Gery was born in Lienz, Austria. From a very young age Gery was fascinated with all mountain sports. Fueled by his passion for the mountains and his ability to share his enthusiasm with others, at the age of 20 he became the youngest Austrian mountain guide. Shortly after, he was introduced to Heli Skiing taking him to Canada and a long career with CMH as one of their lead guides. His contribution to the Bow Valley and Austrian climbing community with many multi pitch routes, sport route, mixed routes and daring ski lines, made Gery a well known climbing friend and mentor world wide. Gery shared his love for the mountains with everyone throughout his life and especially as a father for he loved climbing and skiing with his children. A world-class climber, mountain guide, and photographer, Gery inspired many and touched the hearts of anyone who knew him. He was a son, brother, father, husband, friend, and our pet wolverine. He had an infectious smile and laugh that made us follow him everywhere. He will be deeply missed. He is survived by Bella, Luka and Kimbi; his mom Paula; brothers Walter, Peter, and Franz.
