Jan 10, 1922 - March 27, 2023

Our family is deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Mom and Grandma at the age of 101.

She departed this world exactly the way she wanted, peacefully in her sleep. Mom was born in Wostok, Alberta, on January 10th, 1922, the second of eleven siblings. She took her Nursing Degree in Vegreville.

In 1949, she married Alexander Hertz, and they made their home in Olds. Mom then paused her career to raise their family. When Dad passed, Mom returned to nursing until retiring from the Didsbury Hospital at the age of 65. Mom loved gardening and her yard was her oasis. She enjoyed curling, cooking, travelling, dancing, and spending time with family and friends. She was an active member in the community belonging to the Catholic Church, Olds Legion, The Evergreen Club, and volunteering for the Sunshine Bus.

She left the family home at the age of 99 to receive well deserved rest and care at Seasons Retirement Home. We often asked her what the secret was to live to be 100. She said exercising, working, gardening, and eating lots of salt!  Mom had a great sense of humour, mixed with a little sarcasm, and she was never afraid to speak the truth.  We teased her that she had to live long enough to return birthday wishes to the Queen. When the Queen passed, she said, “Well, I outlived her so no card will be written. Can I go now?”  Yes Mom, now you can go.

Jean was predeceased by her husband Alex, in 1973, and her son-in-law Bill in 2013.

She will be forever missed by her children, Kathy, Pat, Greg (Judy), Barb (Reg) and Kevin (Vicky), as well as her 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Jean had a large extended family and many friends who are also mourning her loss. The family would like to extend appreciation for the care provided by the staff at Seasons Encore in Olds over the past two years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. As per Mom’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Cremation has taken place and an internment ceremony will take place this spring at the Olds Cemetery, where she can now rest with Dad. Heartland Funeral Services Ltd., Olds entrusted with the arrangements. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed at www.heartlandfuneralservices.com
