Leona Jeffers

March 13, 1927 - July 12, 2020

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Leona Mae Jeffers (née Holtzmann). Mom passed away peacefully in Canmore General Hospital, Sunday July 12, at the age of 93.

She is the much loved mother to her son Gary Jeffers of Canmore, and her daughter Judy Hanson (John) of Saskatoon. She is also survived by two wonderful granddaughters, Ashley Hill (Cory) and Courtney Tait (Jamie), and by her beautiful great granddaughter Nora Hill, all of Saskatoon. She will also be deeply missed by her long time friend, Henry (Al) Spencer of Canmore.

Leona was predeceased by her husband of 44 years Ron Jeffers, her parents Eva and Milton Holtzmann, her two brothers Lorne and Wilf, and by her sister Hazel.

Our mother lived an amazing and active life. Having been born in Neudorf, Saskatchewan, her first job was as a bank teller there for the Royal Bank. As well as being a loving Mom to us, she found time through the years for many things, including working for Zellers, Simpsons-Sears, and here in Canmore, for Mountview Grocery.

Moving to Canmore in 1972, our Mom and Dad started the Macleods store. Mom also helped Dad run the Gulf service station here in Canmore for several years.

Mom has always been very active, as all her friends know. She had a special love for golf and curling, and also enjoyed bowling, shuffleboard, bocce, floor curling, and lawn bowling. She has many awards acknowledging her athletic prowess. Mom also loved playing bridge with her many friends here in Canmore. In her spare time she knit many beautiful sweaters for her family, and also for the Tuck shop in the Canmore hospital. She enjoyed swimming once or twice a week at Elevation Place as well.

Our mother also had a great love for music. She loved playing the piano, and nothing gave her more joy than playing for friends and family. Occasionally she would be asked to play for an event at Origins and she loved to oblige.

Leona had a long and healthy life until cancer appeared 8 months ago. She was an amazing woman who lived a wonderful life. We will miss her every day.

We would like to give special thanks to Dr. Kimberley Sargent, as well as the ER doctors, nurses and care aides at Canmore Hospital, whose professionalism and loving care made all the difference. Also huge thanks to the entire home care team, led by Julie Desautels and Loraine Piche, for their incredible support.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
