Aligra Wine & Spirits is one of the top destinations in the Edmonton area for fine and imported wines, rare finds, customized gift baskets, and expert customer service led by a knowledgeable wine expert with a level ll sommelier designation. Alison Philips, Co-Owner, launched Aligra in 2007 alongside her partner Grant.
It started with an opportunity and a vision of what Aligra could become.
“We had taken over a poorly run liquor store location in West Edmonton Mall and saw it as a chance to turn it into something special, which we did,” explains Alison. “Not many people expect there to be a boutique liquor store in Canada’s largest shopping mall! Now, for over 14 years, we have seen people from all over the world visit the mall and shop at our store.”
While Aligra has proven to be popular among tourists, it also remains a hidden gem among the locals.
“Edmonton residents are often not inclined to come to the mall,” says Alison. “When I tell people about our store and where we are, they’re intrigued. When they do stop by, they are pleasantly surprised by our great selection, helpful staff and pleasant shopping experience.”
The shopping experience helps drive Aligra’s success. Customer service is the main focus, translating into a store that provides shoppers with an array of products, a clean and safe environment, and knowledgeable staff ready to help answer questions.
Aligra is also agile; tasting sessions have now pivoted to virtual events during the pandemic. Alison adds, “With health restrictions limiting capacity at West Edmonton Mall, our walk-in customers have dropped considerably. We’re doing our best to send out special offers to our large database through our e-newsletters and are also offering curbside pickups and home delivery. We’ve expanded our social media marketing, including offering custom made gift baskets for people to purchase for family and friends.”
The ability to provide rare wine and spirits also sets Aligra apart. “We are the only liquor store in Western Canada selling Danish Akvavit. We bring in several palettes a few times a year and presell to the large Danish community. Other favourites include our good quality tequilas. We have aficionados who buy from us regularly.”
As a community-minded business, Aligra is proud to support WSAC (Westend Seniors Activity Centre), Edmonton’s Food Bank, veteran-focused charities, and many other non-profit initiatives.
At Aligra, you can enjoy a shopping experience in a boutique environment while finding your favourite wines and spirits, or something new and exciting to try. Discover even more through the wine club and create a gift basket to surprise someone you love. Talk to the staff who can provide information and suggestions – Aligra is pleased to have Sommelier Ken Bracke on the team for the past 10 years, providing his expert advice.
Alison concludes, “We are staying the course to get through these rougher times. We look forward to welcoming back visitors and shoppers to West Edmonton Mall and offering them the great service and selection for which we are known.”
When you choose to support local stores like Aligra, you choose to embrace, support, and empower the small businesses on which the city thrives. Tourists flock to Aligra – the local population should be in on the secret as to why people come from far and wide to enjoy what is in our own backyard.
