At the Rocky View Schools (RVS) board of trustees meeting this morning (Oct. 19), Rick Sweet of Grandparents on Guard, a group from the Rocky View area, affiliated with the recent "1 Million March 4 Children" protests, presented to trustees about his group’s opposition to the current human sexuality curriculum being taught in RVS.
Sweet flanked by supporters, who earlier in the morning had been protesting outside RVS’ head office in Airdrie, spoke about his particular concerns with sex education for younger students.
The grades of primary concern to Sweet were the grades four, five and six, whose curriculum outlines sexual education classes where students are taught human sexuality and learn about puberty, particularly topics like sexual orientation, safe sex practices, human and sexual anatomy, and consent.
“I want you to ask yourself at what age would you want a stranger telling your child or your grandchild about oral or anal sex? I don’t want to see them in a K-8 curriculum. Ever.” he stated.
As a concerned grandparent, Sweet stated his belief that these children in grades four, five, and six, are too young to be taught what is in the curriculum, and that the province should have teachers “[create] an alternate plan” for students whose parents decide to opt out of the Sex Ed. classes.
He referred to some books in the school libraries as “child pornography” because they represent characters of different sexual orientations who discuss romantic encounters, or traumatic sexual experiences.
None of the board of trustees present for the meeting spoke in response to Sweet's presentation.
