LETTER: Cooper's actions don't represent my views

'Cooper's attendance at the rally shows that he believes in individual rights over common good, but the real question is do most people in his constituency share this view? I know I certainly do not.'

Erin O'Toole, when he faced a vote on his leadership, said that Conservatives have a choice, and one is, "to recognize that conservatism is organic not static and that a winning message is one of inclusion, optimism, ideas, and hope."

I couldn't agree more. Who benefits from socially conservative ideals? Certainly not new, non-European Canadians nor Indigenous Canadians; no one with non-traditional families does; and nor do women in general. It is a very narrow group of traditionally influential people who benefit from this philosophy.

MP Michael Cooper, in his actions and statements, has shown his belief in this view of society. I wasn't surprised to find out he took part in the Ottawa rally, but I was extremely disappointed. His actions in no way represent my views. I am appalled that people across the country will now think of St. Albert when they think of individuals who desecrated the country's war memorial and showed such disrespect for one of Canada's most selfless citizens.

Both of these sites represent people who put the community ahead of their own lives — the complete opposite of what the rally stood for. Cooper's attendance at the rally shows that he believes in individual rights over common good, but the real question is do most people in his constituency share this view? I know I certainly do not.

Mary Anne Stanway, St. Albert
