Re: "Heron defends statement over Cooper's attendance at rally," The Gazette, Feb. 2.

Mayor Cathy Heron owes MP Michael Cooper a public apology for words spoken about him regarding his attendance at the truckers’ freedom protest. Cooper was doing exactly what all MPs, including the prime minister, should have been doing. He is our MP in Ottawa. That is his job. Within St. Albert there is a large contingent of Cooper and trucker supporters. Why would the mayor involve herself in federal matters such as this? And why would she upset a large segment of St. Albertans? She should stick to local matters.

Is the mayor like our prime minister in that she will only talk with those with whom she agrees? That is not a winning strategy. Does she not try to understand the truckers' point of view?

The truckers are protesting for a good cause: freedom. They have phenomenal support. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s insistence on everyone being vaccinated since we are at the 90 per cent vaccination point is ridiculous, especially when considering other countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Britain etc. have relaxed their requirements. Control freaks (like Trudeau) and bureaucrats will never cease unless challenged.

Heron needs to make a public apology to Cooper and to the people of St. Albert. She was out of line. She is entitled to her personal opinion, but she represents more than herself.

Don Diack, P.Eng., St. Albert
