LETTER: Heron should have asked residents before speaking for us

'I praise Cooper for attending and upholding our Charter right to protest both forced injections along with the loss of employment for failing to comply.'

Re: "Heron defends statement over Cooper's attendance at rally," The Gazette, Feb 2.

The article stated, "she released the initial statement because people were so upset he was there, and she felt the need to say that is not who St. Albertans are."

I would appreciate Mayor Cathy Heron supplying the number of upset people she interviewed. If she is going to assert that all the residents of St. Albert feel this way, I must state that she failed to interview me, and I have lived in St. Albert for 30 years. Would the mayor please supply the details leading to this declaration explaining how many people were interviewed that felt MP Michael Cooper should be there?

I praise Cooper for attending and upholding our Charter right to protest both forced injections along with the loss of employment for failing to comply. Both are major violations of our Charter rights. Cooper has no control over what people write on their protest signs, but he is elected by us to uphold the law, including the Charter.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is the highest law of the land, it may be prudent for someone in leadership to be familiar with it. If the mayor wishes to speak for me in the future, I would appreciate being asked my opinion first.

John Shyback, St. Albert
