LETTER: It makes no sense for Canada to export natural gas to China

Re: “Canada must act globally to battle climate change,” Editorial, The Gazette, Nov. 3.

As a professional geophysicist, I believe science (geology, ice cores, etc.) showing that climate changes. There appears to be a climate cycle of approximately 100,000 years (probably caused by variations in the nuclear reactions in the sun). The question is: does man have any impact on the climate? I will point out that ice studies show the carbon dioxide levels were as high or higher 100,000 years ago. This is also true 200,000 years ago, etc.

The Gazette's editorial suggests that Canada should export natural gas to China. Canada is presently the number five producer of natural gas in the world, however, we are number 18 in the proven reserves of natural gas.

Why would China buy from Canada when they can get it by pipeline from Russia (number one in proven reserves) or by using LNG or by pipeline from Iran (number two in proven reserves) or Qatar by LNG (number three in proven reserves)? Why would China import when they are number 10 in proven reserves?

Our exports of natural gas have been going down in recent years, while our imports from the U.S. have gone up. We will soon be a net importer.

Abandoning electrical generation from coal is stupid. The cost of electricity and heating is going to be high.
