LETTER: Names of our streets chosen because of historical impact

Re: "Impact of street name change will 'ripple out in all directions,'" Letters, The Gazette, Dec. 15.

Thank you to letter-writers Steve Christian, Tom Cooper, Ken McMorris, and Gerry Segger, whose letters spoke for me, too. I worked on the St. Albert Historical Society’s project publishing a book about St. Albert’s rich history. The names of most streets in our city have been chosen because those people played a role in St. Albert’s development.

I like Steve Christian’s idea to put up plaques in the neighbourhoods in question, briefly explaining why the name was chosen, and the history. This way we do not pretend our history never happened, which would also erase an opportunity for current and future residents to understand the changes in societal values.

Thanks to James Johnston for pointing out that $325,000 is a lot of taxpayer money that could do some good things in our city. Why do we need yet another study, yet another consultation? The cost of plaques explaining our history would certainly be much less than that and would be historically honest.

Linda Podlubny, St. Albert
