LETTER: Pity for grocery stores to throw out perfectly good food

'I find it appalling that, in this day and age, and especially with food prices increasing, groceries stores do not have a process to be able to give this food to people in need.'
letter-sta

The other day I was shopping at a local grocer in Edmonton and noticed a waste-height tall garbage can in plain sight of the public. The garbage can was filled with fruits that were still acceptable, in my opinion. I approached the floor manager of the produce area and asked him if I could take these fruits and give them to people in need. He responded by saying that he couldn't let me take them as he would be questioned by his supervisors.

I find it appalling that, in this day and age, and especially with food prices increasing, groceries stores do not have a process to be able to give this food to people in need. If this is happening in one grocery store, I am sure it is happening elsewhere. We shouldn't be wasting food this way. If anything, lower the price of this food to sell it, or donate this food to local charities, rather than throwing it out.
