LETTER: St. Albert's photo radar policy needs changing

'No fine structure is posted by St. Albert on the city's website. It sure reads like it's more important to generate maximum revenues than focus on disclosure and public safety.'

Radar fines should be more reasonable. What does St. Albert have to hide? Well apparently quite a bit on this topic. The mayor and council seem to be preoccupied with social justice and topics of limited interest to the electorate.

Can a St. Albert photo radar vehicle be identified like the City of Edmonton's? Do you know the colour of the vehicle? Is it marked by a flag? Does it say anything about safety? Are there pylons around the vehicle? I think the answer to all of this is a resounding, "no."

Then there's the fine structure. A fine in Edmonton for one km/h slower is $30 less. No fine structure is posted by St. Albert on the city's website. It sure reads like it's more important to generate maximum revenues than focus on disclosure and public safety. And the mayor complains when the province puts a lid on photo enforcement. Perhaps she should make sure policies reflect fairness and provide oversight of the city's operation. Then people will feel there's some rationale to photo enforcement.

A. Reich, St. Albert
