This summer, Alberta’s Capital Region invites residents and visitors alike to embrace the wonders of rural charm, found just a stone's throw away from our city.

Here are five hidden gems within an hour's drive, offering fresh air, outdoor activities, and an escape from the urban hustle and bustle — no passport required.

1. The University of Alberta (formerly Devonian) Botanic Garden: Nestled in the countryside about 25-minutes southwest of St. Albert, this enchanting botanical space invites guests to explore a diverse range of foliage and architecture. It's an oasis of tranquility with a Japanese Garden, alpine garden, Indigenous garden, butterfly house, and much more. The bugs may be abundant, but the beauty more than makes up for the buzzing.

2. Fruit farms: There is perhaps no better way to spend a summer afternoon than enjoying hand-picked fruit under the prairie sun. Luckily for St. Albertans, there are a range of options for U-Pick farms in the city’s vicinity. Horse Hill Berry Farm, which offers four different raspberry varieties, is located just minutes outside of Fort Saskatchewan. Strawberry Fields Farm, located just a few kilometres west of Windermere, is another great option for a berry-picking adventure. In either case, you’ll enjoy sweet discounts on amazing fruit, straight from the source.

3. The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village: Immerse yourself in Alberta's rich history at this open-air museum located near Tofield. Located 25 minutes east of Edmonton along Highway 16, this living history museum recreates the life of early Ukrainian pioneers with over 30 restored historic buildings. Engage with costumed role-players, and witness first-hand how these early settlers lived. If you like Fort Edmonton Park, you’ll love the Ukrainian Village.

4. Elk Island National Park: A wildlife lover's haven is located just east of Sherwood Park. It’s minutes off the Henday, but the park’s placid atmosphere makes it feel as though you could be hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest city. Here, visitors can catch glimpses of bison, elk, and over 250 bird species. Explore the park's diverse habitats through its network of hiking trails, or take to Astotin Lake for a serene canoeing experience. Bring your kids, bring your pets, and enjoy crossing paths with other outdoor enthusiasts.

5. Reynolds-Alberta Museum: A time capsule located in Wetaskiwin, the Reynolds-Alberta Museum captures the spirit of Alberta's mechanical heritage. Explore an impressive array of vintage automobiles, airplanes, tractors, and industrial machines, and step back in time through interactive exhibits. Whether a history buff or a car enthusiast, you'll marvel at the ingenuity and evolution of technology showcased here. Discover Alberta's past in a novel way, with every visit offering a different, immersive experience. If it has flown, rolled, or plowed in Alberta, there’s a pretty good chance it’s on display at the Reynolds Museum.

This summer, don’t let Edmonton eat all of your time. Eschew the crowds. Steep yourself in the region’s rich history and natural beauty. Explore more of our backyard. Rediscover timeless classics, and fall in love with rural Alberta all over again.
