Province records 37th COVID-19 death in St. Albert

Three more St. Albertans were diagnosed with the virus in the past 24 hours, and four more have recovered.

Alberta has reported one additional COVID-19-related death in St. Albert on Friday afternoon. The death marks the 37 for the city since the pandemic started.

On Friday, the province said a male in his 80s died Feb. 3. The death is linked to the outbreak at the Youville Home and included comorbidities. This brings the total people who have died at this home to at least 20 since the outbreak there began.

Three new cases of COVID-19 were recorded for St. Albert Friday, and four more people recovered. This brings the active cases in the city down to 89. Since the pandemic began, 1,957 people have been diagnosed and 1,831 have recovered.

At this point, St. Albert has an active case rate of 127.9 per 100,000 people. 

In Sturgeon County, three more people were diagnosed with COVID-19 and two more recovered. Active cases are now at 29. No new deaths were reported. The county’s active case rate has risen slightly to 103.8 per 100,000 people. 

Meanwhile, in Morinville, no new cases or deaths were reported this afternoon. The town remains at 27 active cases with 336 people recovered. The active case rate for the community remains at 236.5 per 100,000 people. 

Province-wide, the number of Albertans hospitalized with COVID-19 are down from 517 yesterday to 473 today, 89 of whom are in the ICU. Nine more deaths were reported in Alberta overnight as the death toll reaches 1,693. 

There are currently 6,407 active cases in the province. 

These latest numbers come as the province prepares to enter step one of its four-step plan to reopen the economy. This opening step will come into effect on Monday and will ease restrictions on restaurants and personal fitness. 

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, is scheduled to update the province in a live press conference on Monday.
