A Sturgeon County man faces numerous charges following a shooting at a Sturgeon County residence last Saturday.

Derek Spiess, 34, has been charged with aggravated assault, pointing a firearm, uttering threats, careless use of a firearm and using a firearm in the commission of an offence.

Redwater RCMP said they were called to a county residence at around 10 p.m. on April 24 for a report that a male had been shot. The victim sustained serious and life-threatening injuries, and RCMP provided first aid until emergency medical services arrived. The injured male remains in hospital in stable condition.

RCMP said the suspect had fled the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived. RCMP called in resources from Westlock, Fort Saskatchewan, St. Albert, Sherwood Park and Morinville, as well as RCMP air support, police dog services and emergency response team, to contain the scene and search the area. Nearby residents were told to shelter in place.

RCMP said they located the suspect at around 2 a.m. several kilometres away.

Spiess has been remanded into custody and was set to appear in Fort Saskatchewan Provincial Court on April 29 to speak to bail.
