A Sturgeon County woman faces numerous charges after RCMP seized firearms and other weapons from her residence just west of St. Albert.
The St. Albert RCMP's crime reduction unit (RCMP) arrested Carley Rae Strayski, 36, after searching her residence on May 19. Strayski faces charges of weapons trafficking, careless storage of firearms, tampering with a firearm's serial number, possessing prohibited weapons, possessing stolen property under $5,000, possessing a controlled substance and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
The CRU began an investigation into weapons trafficking in March, which led them to suspect Strayski was a "straw buyer" – purchasing firearms with a valid possession and acquisition licence (PAL) and then transferring those firearms to known criminals.
A search of the residence on May 19 located the following weapons: a loaded 9 mm pistol with the serial number removed, a loaded .22 calibre rifle, an unloaded 12-gauge shotgun, a taser disguised as a flashlight, a collapsible baton, brass knuckles and three cans of bear spray. Methamphetamine and cocaine were also seized.
Due to the police history of the residence's occupants and the believed presence of firearms at the residence, the K Division North emergency response team (ERT), the St. Albert general investigative section (GIS), St. Albert drug unit, St. Albert traffic unit and Morinville RCMP assisted in the search.
Strayski has been released and is due to appear in Morinville Provincial Court on June 24.
