The Sturgeon Valley Golf and Country Club is abuzz with the success of its recent senior and junior club championships.

"The championships are always a prestigious event," said club general manager Jordan Dekens. This year was no different, with members showcasing their golfing prowess in an atmosphere of camaraderie and competition.

The championships, which are exclusive to club members, are part of the club's commitment to promoting excellence, Dekens said.

"Our team plans and prepares for our events months in advance,” Dekens said. “We review feedback from previous years and look to make changes each year to improve the overall experience for our members."

Spectators, mostly family and friends of participants, had a thrilling weekend of golf to take in. One highlight was the senior men's championship, which escalated to a heart-stopping playoff. The title was ultimately clinched by Ray Frayne, who won with an excellent par putt on the first playoff hole.

Part of the appeal of the weekend’s event was the wide range in age of the golfers, with youth and veteran players coming together to take part. Joining Frayne as club champions are Ben Sinclair, who finished the tournament with a score of 150 to take the junior crown, and seasoned golfer Bob Demco, who came out victorious in the super-senior category.

While golfers are used to dealing with obstacles like sand and water, smoke is a less-common type of hazard.

"This year the smoky conditions on day one were challenging for both staff and participants," Dekens said. Despite this, the staff and golfers pressed on.

Dekens said the championships cultivate growth and development, especially among the younger participants.

"The opportunity to be crowned 'club champion' for the year motivates our junior members  — and all members, for that matter," he said. He said the championships also foster community spirit.

"Part of our mission statement is to be a welcoming, inclusive, semi-private golf community dedicated to delivering a high value experience for all," Dekens said. "We are a place where 'friends meet and friendships grow.' The club championships are just one of our great events we offer to our members where it provides a competitive but fun golfing experience."

Sturgeon Valley has several more events lined up for the summer: the men's and ladies club championships running July 28-30, ladies' member guest on Aug. 9, men's member guest on Aug.16, and its Fall Classic running Sept. 8-10.
