Morinville’s Community Cultural Centre will reopen for plays and meetings later this month.
Morinville town council heard updates on the reopening of the Morinville Community Cultural Centre and Morinville Leisure Centre March 9. Both were closed for much of 2020 due to pandemic-related health measures.
The province closed community centres on Nov. 27, 2020, and allowed them to partially reopen on March 8, 2021.
Town community services manager Sharleen Edwards told council that the cultural centre would reopen for bookings March 22 and be available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday, or on weekends by request. Guests were to wear masks at all times while in the centre.
The centre was available for virtual events, weddings for up to 10 people, and funerals for up to 20 people. Funeral and wedding receptions were not allowed. Groups of up to 10 people could hold performances at the centre (which could involve singing and musical instruments) provided they stayed three metres apart at all times and did not host an audience. Children could also take part in developmental activities through groups such as Scouts, Girl Guides, and 4-H.
The province closed gyms and rec-centres on Dec. 13, 2020, and reopened them Feb. 8, 2021 for one-on-one training only. That grew to include low-intensity indoor group fitness on March 1.
The town’s leisure centre has been open since Feb. 23 and would expand its services as of March 16, Edwards said. The rec-centre would be available to use from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday by appointment only, with the weight room, treadmills, recumbent bikes and indoor track available for low-intensity workouts. Low-intensity group fitness such as yoga would resume March 22. Spectators will still be banned, and masks were required at all times.
