Bud (Edwin) Ettinger

May 28, 1942 - April 8, 2024

On Monday, April 8, shortly after the once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse, Bud passed away from our world with his family by his side–our once in a lifetime mountain man.

Throughout his life, Bud had a profound impact as a teacher, school administrator, B&B operator, hiking guide and naturalist, but his most cherished role was as a husband (to Genia Luchka), father (to Bern, Nick and Emma) and uncle. He is remembered for his contagious passion for the outdoors and the adventures he shared with us all. He navigated natural landscapes with the enthusiasm of someone experiencing the world around him for the first time.

Although once an intrepid mountaineer who summited Mt. Denali, Mt. Joffrey, Mt. Kilimanjaro and other peaks in the Rockies, in his later years he learned to slow down and take in the journey, a lesson he shared with as much pride and zest as his stories. He explored many places throughout Europe, East Africa, East Asia, and the North but nowhere was ‘home’ like the Canadian Rockies, where he lived for the last 34 years.

We know Bud and his sense of adventure is in each of us…his lasting legacy.

A celebration of life is being planned for Saturday, June 8th in Canmore at the Miners’ Union Hall at 2 p.m. It will be a gathering of sharing memories, photos and stories.

In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary: Stroke Team.
