William Dave Thomas Obituary photo

(March 14, 1931-January 29, 2022)

It is with sadness we announce that Dave went to his eternal home on January 29th. He was surrounded by family in his final hour.

Dave was predeceased by his beloved wife Carin on Christmas day and his brothers-in-law Manfred and Dick. Dave is survived by his sister-in-law Oralee; his brother Anton (Cathy); his sister Daphne; his children Denzil and Kendell (Cheryl); his grandsons Garret (Kaitlin), Joshua (Carla), as well as numerous extended family members and friends.

Dave was born March 14 1931 in Drumheller, Alberta. The oldest child of William and Ida Thomas, by the age of 7 the family had settled on Pendryl farm where David went to school until grade 11. He went to Wetaskiwin for grade 12. He attended the University of Alberta and received a degree in Education. He also became quite an accomplished athlete, winning the cross-country race in the late 1950s. His future wife Carin met him at the finish line. After teaching for many years he went to Washington State University for summer school to study psychology. He ended up getting a Master’s degree. He then worked for the St. Albert separate school district number 6 overseeing the guidance counselling. Then he was the guidance councillor for Elmer S. Gish School. After that he went into private practice.

Dave married Carin in 1959. They had two children, Denzil in 1964 and Kendell in 1966. Dave had a lifelong love of reading and learning and enjoyed travel to many places, especially Cornwall U.K. Dave made friends wherever he went and loved to tell stories of his adventures. In his later years he volunteered for the St. Albert food bank and if you needed a knife sharpened you could go to Red Willow place on any Thursday and he would sharpen your knives to perfection. A true people person, he will be missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank the many friends and family who visited and cared for Dave especially Stephen Kondics, Lois Durie, and Caryn Knudson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Red Willow Place Saint Albert (seniors’ center).

A memorial service for Carin Thomas will be held at 10 am on February 22, 2022 at Evergreen Funeral Home, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton.
