VISMAN, August Care (Gus)

Posted

Visman, August

20 April 1943 to 11 July 2022

Gus passed away peacefully at home in St. Albert with his family at the bedside.

He will be sincerely missed and lovingly remembered by Pat, his wife of 57 years, his daughter Jennifer Bentley and son Ian Visman (Felicia Carrera-Lowe), grandchildren Cooper and Peri Bentley, Lilia and Elyse Visman. He was predeceased by his younger brother, John Maarten, his parents Jan and Truda Visman. He is survived by his sisters Trudy Visman, Maggie Komar (Randy) and his in-laws Happy Van de Valk-Bouman (Bill), Joan Smith and John Bell (Sue Ferenc).

Gus enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends scattered around the world. Gus emigrated from Holland to Canada with his family at the age of 8 (1951), growing up in Calgary and Edmonton. Gus graduated with a BA in Economics from the Dalhousie University. He spent a career in various enterprises, mostly related to finance.

Living in St. Albert for the past 52 years, Gus was active with community organizations including the Edmonton YMCA, the St. Albert Nordic Ski club, and their condo association board. Gus loved swimming, biking, racing his Osprey and Laser sailboats at the Wabamun Sailing club, and walking his newspaper route which he took up after retirement as a way of staying fit and being paid for it. He thoroughly enjoyed this unexpected 12-year career and the early morning delivery business, goofy as this may sound. Gus and Pat have had many memorable experiences during their lifetime together. From university days in Nova Scotia, to a short time in Regina and finally to St. Albert where they have been for 52 years. Summer holidays at Shandy Cove on Mara Lake were a big part of their family get togethers along with many other trips.

Gus and Pat liked to explore the road less travelled. Quite often you would find them setting off, map in hand, tent gear in the trunk. There will be no service at this time but, if you would like to remember Gus, please donate to the Parkinson’s Association of Alberta (https://parkinsonassociation.ca).
