Volorney, John obituary photo

March 15, 1946 – July 1, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our compassionate and loving father, grandfather, brother, and loyal friend, John Volorney of St. Albert, Alberta.  John was 76 years old when he slipped away from us peacefully on July 1st, 2022.

John was born in the rural town of Barrhead, Alberta, and lived in the Vega community for most of his early years before moving to Edmonton in 1953. After graduating from Victoria Composite High School in Edmonton, John pursued and received his Journeyman Radio Technician Certification from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).  He and his then business partner and friend, Gary Shonkwiler purchased Gateway TV, which became Alberta Radio & TV Ltd in 1973. The business then relocated to Grandin Park Plaza in St. Albert until 2014.  The business grew along with the popularity of home electronics, including VCRs, laser-disk players, Hi-Fi record players and receivers that he sold and serviced.

John was a respected and knowledgeable community builder, as well as an avid gardener who was extremely generous with his annual hauls of apples, tomatoes, peppers and berries.  He would often give away buckets of vegetables and boxes of crisp apples, expecting nothing in return.  This unwavering kindness and generosity are what will remain with so many people as his lasting legacy.

John is survived by his sister Elsie; eldest daughter Chantelle (Rob); son Benjamin (Christine); and his grandchildren: Jordyn, Charlotte, Molly, India, Shiloh, Sloane, and Gage.  He was predeceased by his parents John and Pauline Volorney; older sister Helen (Neuman); and brother Nick. He will also be missed by his many cousins, nephews, and other relatives.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at St. Albert Funeral Home, Connelly-McKinley, 9 Muir Drive, St. Albert, AB.

Memorial donations in John’s memory can be made to any charity of choice.
