A St. Albert man has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years behind bars after a police bust revealed homemade guns.

Eric Berube, 27, of St. Albert, pleaded guilty to four charges and was handed down a lifetime firearm prohibition.

Berube was given credit for 238 days in pre-trial custody, which will be taken off his total sentence.

On March 6, the St. Albert Crime Reduction Team executed a search warrant on Sunset Boulevard with the assistance of the St. Albert General Investigative Section and the General Duty Unit.

The search was the result of an extensive investigation into possible illegal firearms manufacturing at the home.

The RCMP said they seized eight illegal weapons and accessories including two derringer pistols, one Mac-10 machine pistol, one SKS with a modified carbine, one Sten submachine gun, one silencer, two prohibited magazines and one stun gun. Numerous rounds of ammunition were also discovered at the property.

Police say all of the weapons were functional and two were loaded at the time of the arrest.

Two men were arrested without incident and charged as a result of the investigation.

Berube was initially facing 41 offences for weapons violations and pleaded guilty to four, including possession of a firearm or weapon in a vehicle, possession of a loaded or prohibited firearm, possession of a prohibited firearm and breach of conditions.

Adam Sparks, 30, of Edmonton has been charged with three weapons violations.

Bail hearing

A duo facing arson charges is slated to come to court in September to speak to bail.

The charges were laid after a fire in Forest Lawn in June.

Duane Irwin, 38, of no fixed address, was charged with arson, theft under $5,000 and failing to comply with a recognizance.

Chloe Martin, 21, of no fixed address, was charged with arson, two counts of failing to comply with recognizance and failing to comply with probation.

The duo had their first appearance on July 4.

On June 25 at around 11:30 p.m., the St. Albert RCMP was called to a structure fire at 20 Forest Drive.

No one was in the residence at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries.
