October 1927 - July 2023

True to the way she lived life, our dear mother passed away quietly with her usual grace on July 10, 2023 with her daughter Beverley by her side.

A kind, gentle person, mom was beloved by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all who knew her. Wherever mom went people commented on her beauty but for those of us close to her, we knew that beauty extended to her heart and soul. She was the most caring mother anyone could wish for and, thankfully, she was our mom. We feel so blessed to have had her in our lives for so long…..yet not long enough. She will be deeply missed, and we’ll hold her forever in our hearts.

She is survived by her children: Leslie (Ken) Leibel, Beverley Como, Casey (Susan) Como; daughter-in-law Barb Como; her grandchildren: Adin (Marcy) Leibel, Michael (Larissa) Leibel, Jared (Carmen) Leibel, Jennifer Heys (Steve Nicol), Stephanie Heys (John O’Brien), Kaylen (Kaylan) Como, Jesse (Brandi) Como, Christopher Como; and step-granddaughters: Alisha and Tannis. She is also survived by her sister Rose Fowler; brother Ken (Dawn) Weigand; sister-in-law Adrienne Michalchuk; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Connie was predeceased by her husband, Robert; her sons, Doug and Jeff; grandson Conner; her parents, Ed and Mary Weigand; and her brothers, Vernon and Bill.

Mom lived a long and full life. At the young age of 18 she, a city girl, married a farmer from Riviere Qui Barre. Farm life at that time was not easy. Within 3 months of their marriage their home burnt to the ground. They rebuilt but for many years there was no electricity, running water or central heating yet we have such fond memories of the cozy, loving home mom made for us.

July 1964, the family moved to Edmonton. Mom took night classes at NAIT obtaining an accounting certificate and over many years she did the books, payroll, and tax preparation for the family business, Como Gas Services. During the construction off-season, she and Robert travelled extensively: New Zealand, Australia, Europe, Hawaii, Mexico also taking road trips across the USA and Canada.

In 1991, they retired and moved into Churchill House I in St. Albert and by the time mom moved out in 2017, she was the only original resident left in the building. For many years Mom volunteered with the Sturgeon Hospital Women’s Auxiliary working in both the hospital gift shop and SHAVA bookstore. She also served as a volunteer usher at the Arden Theatre and was member of the local Red Hat Ladies which she enjoyed until age 90. Mom loved music, travel, gardening, homemaking and most of all, her family.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Connie’s life will be held at a later date.

Should you wish to donate in memory of Connie may we suggest West Country Hearth, St. Albert Sturgeon Hospice Association, or any charity of your choice.

We would like to acknowledge the current and former residents of Churchill House I who watched over mom after dad passed. Most recently, mom lived at West Country Hearth in Villeneuve where she was cared for with kindness and respect by the staff. Sincere thanks to all who work at this wonderful care facility.
